Ear Infections

Ear infections can be serious. Make sure to clean your Westie's ears with an ear cleaner such as Otis-Clean on a regular basis. Follow the instructions on the bottle. Check the ears weekly to make sure there is no sign of infection or dark discharge. Always keep hair out of the ear canals, trim hair from the tips of your dog's ears and down the sides of the ears about an inch. This will help keep the ears clean and less hair weight will be put on the ear cartilage. When infections do occur, one of the most common medications used by your veterinarian is Panalog. Chronic infections of the ear canal require prolonged treatment.

Has your veterinarian "cultured" your Westie's ear or ears? Yeast or fungal infections are common in West Highland White Terriers. The treatment would be different for these conditions than for bacterial infections. There is a new product available from your veterinarian that is providing excellent results for yeast and fungal infections. The name of this product is Zymox-E. Monitor ear infections very closely and report hearing changes to your vet immediately.
