Conformation Westies

What is Conformation?

Conformation is defined in part as: "Correspondence especially to a model or a plan"; "STRUCTURE"; "The proportionate shape or contour, esp. of an animal".

In the Dog World, the structure of a dog is of great importance. This has given rise to the world of dog shows where dogs and bitches are compared to the written standard which describes the ideal of the breed. A breeder is constantly involved in an attempt to better their stock so that they will more closely fit the "standard".

Good breeders are out to improve the breed. This is something that is very hard to do in isolation. Entering their dogs in a dog show allows others to review and judge their dogs so that they can better identify both their attributes and faults. It is difficult to improve until you are fully aware of the areas that are in need of improvement. When judges point out the weak areas in your dog, you are better equipped to breed to strengthen that weakness.

This is what Conformation showing is all about.

History in the WHWTCA

When the National West Highland White Terrier Club of America was formed in 1909, it was formed as a Conformation Club. This is the original reason for its existance and the current major area of interest. All other activities are important and welcome but Conformation is a required activity.
